The annual convention is one of the most prestigious and much awaited events of CESASC featuring a technical symposium during the day, followed by an achievement award ceremony accompanied by entertainment in the evening.
The convention begins at 8:30 am and winds up at 9 pm. It is going to be one power packed day with a load of opportunities for you to meet and learn from the Who’s Who in the field of science, technology and business. There will be more than 350 distinguished members and guests to attend this full-day extravaganza.
At 53rd CESASC Annual Convention, we will have:
- Morning Keynote Speech – Mr. Harry Lee, the most successful in Corporate America.

Mr. Harry Q.H. Lee, II, a fourth generation of Chinese American and former Vice President of Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC), will give the first keynote speech titled “Ascending the Corporate Ladder: Can it be done without compromising my cultural values?”
The speech will address a combination of individual, cultural, and organizational factors that impede Asian Americans’ career progress at workplace and questions such as being a minority at workplace, what else do we need to succeed except for working twice harder than the others? What is the Bamboo Ceiling? .
10:15 AM Leadership, Excellence, Aspiration and Platform (LEAP)
LEAP workshop, chaired by Dr. Yutao He, technical staff at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), provides presentations by extraordinary engineers and scientists who will share their entrepreneurial experience or discuss strategies and skills development needed to advance in their research and career.
11:20 AM Noon Keynote Speech & Lunch
Dr. Edward C. Stone, professor of Caltech, former Director of JPL, will talk about how space becomes part of our lives. He is the best space scientist in the world and his work about Voyager mission has rewritten the entire text book about space. Dr. Stone has been on many TV and Radio shows, such as The Colbert Report. He is a scientist with the most adorable personality, and you don’t want miss this chance to meet him up front and personal. Bring your family too!

Founder & Former CEO of Watson Pharmaceuticals
Dr. Allen Chao is a Chinese-American businessman who founded Watson Pharmaceuticals and served as Chief Executive Officer from 1984 to 2007 and Chairman until 2008. When he left Watson to pursue his new venture, Watson had approximately 6,000 employees with approximately $3 Billion in sales.
Dr. Allen Chao spent his childhood in Taiwan. After immigrating to the United States, Chao received a Ph.D. in industrial pharmaceuticals from Purdue University in 1973. In May of 2000, he received the degree of Honorable Doctor of Science from Purdue University in recognition of his leadership and vision for the production and marketing of pharmaceutical products for human healthcare.
As a philanthropist, Dr. Chao, along with other members of the Chao family, contributed to the establishment of the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and the H.H. Chao Comprehensive Digestive Disease Center at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, Irvine, California campus. In 2000, Dr. Chao and his siblings made an $8.1-million donation to University of California, Irvine. The fund will be used to complete construction of Sprague Hall, which is dedicated to genetic cancer research. Part of the building on the Irvine campus will be renamed the Chao Family Cancer and Genetics Laboratories. In 2005, Chao contributed to the establishment of The Chao Center for Industrial Pharmacy, located in the Purdue Research Park in Indiana, to provide leadership in pharmaceutical education, development and manufacturing. Currently, he serves as Chairman and Managing Partner of Newport Healthcare Advisors LLC, Chairman of Ansun Biopharma, Inc., Board of Director of Arbor Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Board of Director of Impax Laboratories, Inc. and CEO of Tanvex Biopharma Inc,
Dr. Chao will share his experiences of life from being a pharmaceutical technologist to becoming a very successful businessman who oversees the building of 4 new companies and mentoring the new generation.
Mr. Woo is the co-founder and CEO of Megatoys, an international toy manufacturing company headquartered in Los Angeles. He graduated from UCLA summa cum laude and received his master’s degree in Physics.
He is known as the founder of the Los Angeles Toy District where he helped hundreds of immigrant entrepreneurs start their businesses and create thousands of jobs. Currently he chairs the Workforce Investment Board for the City of Los Angeles, a body that oversees the nation’s second largest workforce development system and has been recognized as the model program for the country. He previously served on the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) Affairs and the State Commission for Economic Development.
Mr. Woo will share his entrepreneurial experience as a Chinese Immigrant and a trained scientist and engineer.
James C. Liao
James Liao is the Parsons Foundation Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles and is the co-founder and lead scientific advisor of Easel Biotechnologies, LLC. Professor Liao has received the 2014 National Academy of Sciences Award, the highest professional honor given to engineers in the United States, for the Industrial Application of Science. He was named Taiwan''s Academia Sinica, the preeminent academic institution in Taiwan. He was also a recipient of the 2010 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award.
Dr. Liao is being honored as a Champion of Change for his work advancing new ideas that are leading the way to a clean energy future and an economy that’s built to last. He was awarded as a White House Champion of Change for Renewable Energy in 2012. One approach his team proposed to use the sunlight and CO2 to generate energy. Dr. Liao and NantWorks LLC EASELwas co-founded by in 2010. EASEL develops environmentally friendly, biosynthetic processes that transform wasted by-products into the energy and elements that make-up everyday items.
Professor Liao will share his research results and business experience with us.
Dinner Musical Program
Musical program will be performed by the Los Angeles GloryStar Children’s Choir. For the past 14 years, the Chorus has been invited to perform at Lincoln Center, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Harvard University, and Rockefeller Center. These youngsters will dazzle us with their angelic musical talents.
1. Earth Science: “Monitor and understand sea level and climate from space”
By Dr. Lee-Lueng Fu, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology
Dr. Lee-Lueng Fu is a JPL Fellow and Senior Research Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology. He has been the Project Scientist for JPL’s satellite altimetry missions for oceanographic and geodetic studies since 1988, including TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, and Jason-2. He is currently the Project Scientist for the US/France joint Surface Water and Ocean Topography Mission (SWOT), which is being developed as the next generation altimetry mission for measuring water elevation on Earth.
Dr. Fu''s research has been focused on the variability of sea level in relation to ocean circulation and climate. He received a B.S. degree in Physics from National Taiwan University (1972) and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (1980). He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the American Meteorological Society. Recently he was awarded the COSPAR International Cooperation Medal for his leadership in the development and continuation of satellite altimetry missions.
2. Computer Science: “Customized Computing from Single-chip to Datacenters”
By Dr. Jason Cong, Chancellor''s Professor, UCLA Computer Science Department Director, Center for Domain-Specific Computing
Jason Cong received his B.S. degree in computer science from Peking University in 1985, his M.S. and Ph. D. degrees in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1987 and 1990, respectively. Currently, he is a Chancellor’s Professor at the UCLA Computer Science Department and the director of Center for Domain-Specific Computing (CDSC). He served as the department chair from 2005 to 2008. Dr. Cong’s research interests include synthesis of VLSI circuits and systems, energy-efficient computer architectures, reconfigurable systems, nanotechnology and systems, and highly scalable algorithms. He has over 400 publications in these areas, including 10 best paper awards, and the 2011 ACM/IEEE A. Richard Newton Technical Impact Award in Electric Design Automation. He was elected to an IEEE Fellow in 2000 and ACM Fellow in 2008. He is the recipient of the 2010 IEEE Circuits and System Society Technical Achievement Award "For seminal contributions to electronic design automation, especially in FPGA synthesis, VLSI interconnect optimization, and physical design automation."
Dr. Cong has graduated 32 PhD students. Nine of them are now faculty members in major research universities, including Cornell, Fudan Univ., Georgia Tech., Peking Univ., Purdue, SUNY Binghamton, UCLA, UIUC, and UT Austin. Dr. Cong has successfully co-founded three companies with his students, including Aplus Design Technologies for FPGA physical synthesis and architecture evaluation (acquired by Magma in 2003, now part of Synopsys), AutoESL Design Technologies for high-level synthesis (acquired by Xilinx in 2011), and Neptune Design Automation for ultra-fast FPGA physical design (acquired by Xilinx in 2013). Currently, he is a co-founder of Falcon Computing Solutions, a startup dedicated to enabling FPGA-based customized computing in cloud computing.
3. Biomedical Science & Technology: “Technologies for healthcare improvement”
By Dr. Wanwan Yang, Vice President of Research & Development at ImpeDx Diagnostics
Dr. Wanwan Yang is the VP of Research & Development at ImpeDx Diagnostics; a medical device company develops and markets a novel system for rapid detecting bacteria in blood culture specimens for use in clinical laboratories. Prior to ImpeDx Diagnostics, she worked in O-Ray Pharmaceuticals, a startup company developing sustained release formulations to deliver drugs to the inner ear. Before working in the biotech industry, she was a postdoctoral scholar/lab manager at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Wanwan received her Ph.D. in environmental microbiology from Caltech in 2009, where she developed a fast and low cost fluorescence assay and built a microscopy – based device to quantify food and water borne bacterial pathogens.
4. Transportation: “California High Speed Rail Update”
Juan Carlos Velasquez is the Regional Manager for the Palmdale to Burbank and Bakersfield to Palmdale sections of the 800-mile statewide California High Speed Rail program. He is responsible for the overall management of multi-disciplinary consultant teams consisting of several firms that handle planning, public outreach, conceptual and preliminary design, and the preparation of required environmental documentation. He is part of the high-speed rail Project Management Team of Parsons Brinckerhoff.
Juan Carlos has over 20 years of experience in transportation engineering and management of large infrastructure projects throughout Southern California. He has managed the preparation of corridor, feasibility and project studies, environmental reports and specifications and estimates for highway, major urban transit, railroad, and complex interchange improvement projects. His work on all phases of transportation projects has given him a thorough understanding of federal, Caltrans and public agency standards and requirements.
Juan Carlos is a registered professional engineer. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1992 from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, California. He is also a member of the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and served as Commissioner for the City of Pasadena’s Transportation Advisory Commission from 2002 to 2007.
5. Entrepreneurship: “Being an Entrepreneur”

Dong Li founded Leoch International Ltd. in 1999 and has built the Shenzhen-based company into one of the world’s largest makers of lead-acid batteries, used for telecommunications, as back-up power sources and in electric vehicles. Leoch is traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Mr. Dong also founded and owns Marshell Electric Vehicle Ltd. and Marxon Electronics Ltd., which also focus on new energy technologies and high-performance batteries. He has established more than 50 companies globally, with more than 15,000 employees and over $1 billion in annual revenue. Hi companies’ products are used in more than 100 countries. Mr. Dong earned an Executive MBA from the National University of Singapore and serves on a number of industry organizations, including as Vice Chairman of Guangdong High-Tech Industry Chamber, Executive Vice President of the Chinese American Federation and Honorary Chairman of the Chinese CEO Organization.
